If you choose personalized ads, OpenAI may also use additional signals, like past chats and how you’ve interacted with ads, to make ads more relevant over time. That layering is optional, not automatic. Users who prefer not to share that signal can keep ads non-personalized.

Post-answer placement

Ads appear in a clearly labeled section beneath responses, not inside answers, sidebars, or pop-ups. The placement is structural, your answer comes first, fully independent, and the sponsored unit sits below it. A single ad unit may feature one or more items from an advertiser.

Separate systems, not separate settings

Ads run on separate systems from the chat model, and advertisers have no ability to shape, or alter ChatGPT’s responses. This isn’t a toggle advertisers can influence, the separation is architectural.

Advertiser data is aggregate-only

Advertisers don’t see users’ conversations or personal details. They receive only aggregate performance data like views and clicks.

User control is built in

No, and this is structural, not a policy. OpenAI runs its answer generation and its ad-serving system as completely separate pipelines. Advertisers cannot pay to influence ChatGPT’s responses. Your ad appears below the answer, not inside it.

What user data do we get from ChatGPT?

Aggregate performance data only (for now), which is impressions, clicks, view and interaction rates. OpenAI does not share individual user data with advertisers, and your ad personalization data cannot be accessed by third parties. Users can view and clear their ad interaction history at any time.

Who sees the ads? Can we exclude certain audiences?
